Which EV Should I Buy?

Did the federal EV tax credit end? Yes — here’s what’s left

Checked Sep 28, 2026 · IRS · IRS (used-car credit) · IRS (home charger credit) · IRS (car-loan interest) · P.L. 119-21

  1. Jul 4, 2025

    Law signed (P.L. 119-21)

    Ends the clean-vehicle credits early.

  2. Sep 30, 2025

New ($7,500) and used ($4,000) EV credits end

Applies to vehicles “acquired” after this date — a binding written contract plus a payment. Cars acquired on or before it can still be claimed.

  3. Jun 30, 2026

    Home charger credit (30C) ends

For equipment placed in service after this date.

  4. 2025–2028

    New car-loan interest deduction

Up to $10,000/yr of interest on a NEW car with final assembly in the US. Not EV-specific. Not for leases. Loan must start after Dec 31, 2024. Phases out above $100k (single) / $200k (joint) income.

Does my car qualify for the loan-interest deduction?

It may — if its final assembly was in the US. Where a car is assembled can differ by model year and even by trim, so check the “final assembly point” on the window sticker of the exact car you buy. This is information, not tax advice.

What replaced it

Nothing at the federal level yet. What’s left is state, utility and automaker money — check your state energy office and your utility.
